The Arecaceae family is made up in Cuba of 15 genera and 99 infrageneric taxa (79 species, 10 subspecies or varieties and 10 hybrids). In total, 86 taxa are endemic to the national territory, which gives it one of the highest proportions among the botanical families represented. The richness and diversity of Cuban palms enjoys wide recognition among specialists from around the world. To the extent that the native palms are better known, the homeland will be better known. In this work, the nomenclature, geographical and biogeographical distribution of most of the native palms of Cuba is updated.

The key findings from this work are highlighted and presented as a stepping stone for future research. Cuban research has contributed to understand the diversity and functionality of AM in several tropical ecosystems, mainly evergreen forests, agroecosystems, sand dunes and pasturelands. Inventories were conducted in 10 out of 16 provinces reported 79 AM species, representing 25% of the known species worldwide. Cuban researchers have a great deal of expertise in Glomeromycota taxonomy and have described 11 new species, of which six were not reported elsewhere in the world. Furthermore, important studies conducted in Cuba have shed light on the mycotrophic plants, the role of AM in forest ecosystems, and their use in crop production. The contribution of AM to ecosystem processes is a priority line of research. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary researches are necessary to define the role of AM symbioses and improve biogeochemical models. Recently created Cuban Mycorrhizal Research Network will help to coordinate validation campaigns for various biofertilizers with training courses for Cuban farmers to disseminate the key results on AM. Despite the challenges for Cuban mycorrhizologists, molecular (genomic) techniques, stable isotopes and nuclear magnetic resonance should also be included as priority lines of research in the future.

Since 1997, Cuba adopted an Environmental Education Strategy, which constituted the fundamental working instrument to direct the efforts made until then in environmental matters. After this period and taking into consideration the need for an update, two cycles were designed 2010-2015 and 2016-2020, from which the programmatic document was named the National Environmental Education Program for Sustainable Development (PNEADS). The PNEADS constitutes the instrument to implement projections regarding environmental education. The lines of action presented therein include priority issues and attention to the deficiencies and gaps of previous strategic periods.

Borroto Páez, Rafael; Fabres, Boris A.
Invasive vertebrates like Black Rats (Rattus rattus) and Tropical House Geckos (Hemidactylus mabouia) that, like many other introduced invasives, were unintentionally relocated, are included in the list of the world’s worst invasive species. The negative impact of invasive vertebrates on tropical islands is greater than on continental mainlands or islands at higher latitudes due to high levels of species endemism, the West Indies, in particular, are among the ‘hottest of global biodiversity hotspots. In Cuba, Black Rats and Tropical House Gecko are considered among the worst invasive vertebrate species based on their effects, extensive distributions, abundance, and commensal nature.
