El turismo constituye uno de los sectores de actividad económica de más rápido crecimiento a nivel mundial y en realidad, ha sido de los fenómenos económicos y sociales más importantes en el presente siglo, consecuencia de ello es la tendencia actual en el sector apuntando hacia la asociación y la especialización, resultado de las ofertas, tanto en lo que se refiere a los nuevos destinos como a los productos turísticos y los clientes potenciales, es decir, los turistas, quienes tienen muchas más posibilidades de elegir y exigen más sobre todas las variables del producto turístico, antes de decidirse a visitar por primera vez un lugar o repetir su estancia en él, por lo que el desarrollo turístico debe fundamentarse sobre criterios de sostenibilidad, beneficiar a todos los actores involucrados, ser económicamente viable, ecológicamente sostenible, socioculturalmente aceptable y que proporcione un alto grado de satisfacción.
