| dc.description.abstract | Los Sistemas de Información Geográfica están siendo utilizados cada día más en diferentes investigaciones. El empleo de estas útiles herramientas abarca temas tan diversos como la planificación regional y urbana, el manejo de recursos naturales, sistemas de alerta temprana y respuesta rápida ante alarmas, sistemas de monitoreo en tiempo real, la microlocalización de negocios y servicios on-line de atención al cliente, entre otros. A pesar de que el Caribe a ocupado un lugar relevante en las investigaciones culturales y algunos temas socioeconómicos, no ha sido así en el ámbito de la geociencia y el medio ambiente. El presente trabajo tiene como propósito mostrar el geoprocesamiento realizado para la creación de una base de datos georreferenciada (Banco de Información del Caribe) y el procesamiento de la información para producir mapas temáticos que reflejan diversas aristas convergentes en la situación ambiental del Caribe. Se describen los procesos de selección de la base cartográfica, la obtención y captura de la información, la estructura de la base de datos, así como los software utilizados. El banco de datos elaborado permite que los investigadores y otros interesados en el tema ambiental regional puedan acceder a la información, en general dispersa y deficitaria, e incluso valorar la dinámica en el tiempo de muchos problemas, de forma rápida, empleándola en nuevas aplicaciones y funciones. The Geographic Information Systems are being used more and more in different investigations. The use of these useful tools covers subjects as diverse as regional and urban planning, the management of natural resources, early warning systems and rapid response to alarms, real-time monitoring systems, the micro-location of businesses and on-line services of customer service, among others. Although the Caribbean has occupied an important place in cultural research and some socio-economic issues, it has not been so in the field of geoscience and the environment. The purpose of this paper is to show the geoprocessing carried out for the creation of a geo-referenced database (Caribbean Information Bank) and the processing of information to produce thematic maps that reflect diverse convergent edges in the Caribbean's environmental situation. The processes of selection of the cartographic base, the obtaining and capture of the information, the structure of the database, as well as the software used are described. The elaborated database allows researchers and others interested in the regional environmental issue to access information, in general scattered and deficient, and even assess the dynamics over time of many problems, quickly, using it in new applications and functions.
