En la actualidad, a nivel mundial existe una gran preocupación por los problemas y consecuencias originadas por la contaminación del agua, por lo que antes de su consumo se requiere determinar su calidad sanitaria. El agua para ser consumida por los humanos debe ser potable y reunir ciertas características como son ser incolora, insabora e insípida, libre de gérmenes patógenos, como lo marcan las Normas establecidas por la Secretaria de Salud y/o las guías para la calidad del agua para consumo humano y los organismos internacionales como la Organización Panamericana para la Salud (OPS) y la Organización Mundial de Salud (OMS). En el estado de Guerrero, son escasas las plantas de tratamiento de aguas negras o residuales, la ciudad de Chilpancingo, Gro., no cuenta con ella, por lo que las aguas residuales de algunas colonias se vierten en 54 barrancas y estas van a confluir al cauce del Río Huacapa, el cual atraviesa la ciudad, y por encontrarse a cielo abierto, este por si mismo representa un foco de infección y contaminación tanto del ambiente como de la población, por la cantidad de radicales libres y patógenos. Así mismo, la ciudad de Chilpancingo, carece del suministro suficiente para abastecer a la población de agua para uso y consumo humano. Por lo que existe el servicio de agua a través de pipas, y el agua que es comercializada se obtiene de pozos artesanos que se ubican en las márgenes del cauce del Río Huacapa al sur de la ciudad o de la localidad de Petaquillas.
