Abstract

Una de las primeras y más impactantes transformaciones surgidas a partir del triunfo de la Revolución en enero de 1959, estuvo vinculada al desarrollo de la ciencia. Es en ese marco histórico que surge el nombrado en aquel entonces Instituto de Geografía y Geología, fundado por el Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez, primer Presidente de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba y al que acompañaron figuras relevantes como el Dr. Salvador Massip (Director fundador), la Dra. Sara Ysalgué y otros estudiosos de las ciencias naturales que dieron vida al nuevo proyecto. El trabajo que se presenta tiene como objetivo mostrar los principales resultados alcanzados durante 50 años de investigaciones, los cuales constituyen el patrimonio científico más preciado de las ciencias geográficas en el actual Instituto de Geografía Tropical. Para la realización de este empeño, se buscaron y examinaron documentos, imágenes de expediciones científicas, se evaluaron y seleccionaron los logros de mayor trascendencia para el desarrollo económico y social del país, la colaboración internacional, el aporte en estudios realizados en otras naciones, así como la participación para la elevación del nivel científico de profesionales y técnicos. Los resultados han permitido el rescate de la memoria histórica, documental y gráfica que durante medio siglo de investigaciones avalan la contribución de esta institución a las ciencias geográficas. One of the first and most impressive transformations that emerged from the triumph of the Revolution in January 1959, was linked to the development of science. It is in this historical framework that the Institute of Geography and Geology named at that time arose, founded by Dr. Antonio Núñez Jiménez, first President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and accompanied by relevant figures such as Dr. Salvador Massip (Director founder), Dr. Sara Ysalgué and other scholars of the natural sciences who gave life to the new project. The work presented aims to show the main results achieved during 50 years of research, which constitute the most precious scientific heritage of geographic sciences in the current Institute of Tropical Geography. To carry out this endeavor, documents and images of scientific expeditions were searched and examined, the achievements of greatest importance for the economic and social development of the country, international collaboration, the contribution in studies carried out in other nations, as well as as the participation for the elevation of the scientific level of professionals and technicians. The results have allowed the rescue of the historical, documentary and graphic memory that during half a century of investigations endorse the contribution of this institution to the geographical sciences.
