Impacto de la captura y comercio ilegal de las aves silvestres en Cuba y acciones para minimizar sus efectos

Abstract

Una de las causas que más está afectando a la biodiversidad a nivel mundial, es la captura y comercio ilegal, lo cual ha provocado la extinción total o parcial de muchas especies. El Guacamayo Cubano (Ara tricolor) se extinguió en el siglo XIX porque fue muy cotizado como mascota y sus plumas. En Cuba ha sido una tradición tener aves en jaula, pero en los últimos 30 años se ha convertido en un negocio lucrativo que están afectando seriamente las poblaciones silvestres de aves residentes y migratorias. Nuestro país es signatario de una serie de convenios internacionales y posee leyes que protegen la flora y fauna cubana como el Código Penal y la Ley del Sistema de los Recursos Naturales y el Medio Ambiente. Se demuestra cómo afectan las capturas indiscriminadas, el hacinamiento, conductas a que son sometidas, el número de localidades donde se capturan aves en el período de migración otoñal y a los servicios ecosistémicos que brindan. Se presentan los materiales de educación ambiental que se han preparado para guardabosques, inspectores, funcionarios de aduana y la población en las redes sociales y las comunidades locales. Se dan a conocer los Resultados de entrevistas a la población sobre estas actividades y sus criterios sobre el tema. Se reflejan Resultados en estudios de caso en las comunidades, el papel de los observadores de aves dentro de la ciencia ciudadana y se proponen acciones dentro del Plan Gubernamental para minimizar el efecto de la captura y comercio ilegal de las aves. One of the most significant threats to biodiversity worldwide is the illegal capture and trade of birds, which has led to the total or partial extinction of many species. The Cuban Macaw (Ara tricolor) became extinct in the 19th century because it was highly prized as a pet and for its feathers. Keeping birds in cages has been a tradition in Cuba, but in the last 30 years it has become a lucrative business that is seriously impacting wild populations of resident and migratory birds. Our country is a signatory to several international conventions and has laws protecting Cuban flora and fauna, such as the Penal Code and the Law of the System of Natural Resources and the Environment. This demonstrates how indiscriminate capture, overcrowding, the treatment of birds, the number of locations where birds are captured during the autumn migration period, and the ecosystem services they provide all have a negative impact. Environmental education materials prepared for rangers, inspectors, customs officials, and the public are presented, including those used on social media and in local communities. The results of interviews with the public regarding these activities and their perspectives on the issue are shared. Case studies conducted in communities are presented, highlighting the role of birdwatchers in citizen science, and proposing actions within the Government Plan to minimize the impact of illegal bird capture and trade.
