La virología de las plantas en la antigua Estación Experimental Agronómica, hoy Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical “Alejandro de Humboldt” (INIFAT).

Abstract

La Estación Experimental Agronómica de Santiago de las Vegas, primera institución científica cubana desde 1904, respondió las más disímiles inquietudes y problemáticas de los agricultores cubanos. En esta época a penas se conocían algunas enfermedades de plantas, no se conocían los virus, sin embargo estaban presentes. Se hace un análisis desde los primeros síntomas virales en una planta de fruta bomba (Carica papaya L.). La aparición de enfermedades virales en la agricultura en cultivos como la caña de azúcar (Saccharum officinarum L.), cuando no se conocía ni la naturaleza de los virus, hasta el desarrollo de la Virrología en la institución. Un grupo de especialistas checoslovacos y de Bulgaria junto a varios cubanos, inició las investigaciones virológicas utilizando técnicas modernas que incluían estudios diagnósticos con serología por primera vez en Cuba y vectorología. Además, se desarrolló la colaboración con otras instituciones, se creó un Grupo de Virología y se desarrollaron las instalaciones necesarias para esta especialidad, lo que permitió el estudio de las enfermedades virales en arroz, plátano, frijol, tomate, pimiento, maní y malanga entre otros cultivos de importancia económica. Entre los principales resultados se encuentran la virosis de la fruta bomba, enfermedad hoja blanca del arroz, el mosaico del plátano, tabaco, frijol, pimiento, maní, tomate y malanga. En ésta se obtuvo un control efectivo contra el Virus del mosaico de la malanga mediante “vacunación” aplicada por primera vez en Cuba.
