El creciente desarrollo de instalaciones hoteleras y extrahoteleras, crea la necesidad de buscar vías y métodos para llevar a cabo este proceso con la menor afectación posible al medio natural, o lo que es lo mismo siguiendo los conceptos de un desarrollo sostenible, el turismo debe ejecutar sus actividades sirviéndose de los recursos naturales con el empleo de métodos eficaces en su explotación que armonicen con la naturaleza y no la destruyan, para poder seguir brindando al hombre actual y futuro, las bellezas de nuestro entorno natural y un integrador y bien logrado ambiente social. La provincia de Matanzas introduce en sus planes de desarrollo turístico la dimensión ambiental, por lo que ha creado una Estrategia Ambiental Turística cuyos principios se derivan de la Carta Mundial del Turismo Sostenible.
