El medio ambiente contempla la indisoluble relación entre los componentes naturales y la acción del hombre, estableciendo una dinámica propia de transformación del medio físico. El medio físico, objeto de la geología, puede ser entendido como el conjunto de los materiales terrestres (suelos, rocas, agua, aire) y tipos naturales de energía (gravitacional, solar y otras) incluyendo las modificaciones resultantes de la acción biológica y humana. Dentro de los estudios geólogo ambientales desde principios de los años sesenta se puso de manifiesto una línea de trabajo, la cual se mantiene en la actualidad con los estudios de evaluación general cuya finalidad es llevar a cabo un análisis y diagnóstico de una zona dada (desde el ámbito supra natural al local) con el objetivo de planificar la ubicación de actividades humanas en la misma, con un mínimo de deterioro del medio y un mejor aprovechamiento de sus posibilidades.
