Colecciones de historia natural, su conservación y manejo en Cuba

Abstract

Se destaca la importancia de las colecciones de historia natural como soporte esencial para los estudios de biodiversidad, evolución, enseñanza de las ciencias naturales y sensibilización ambiental, así como su valor patrimonial y su contribución a la reducción de costos en investigaciones científicas. Se reseña la evolución histórica de los procedimientos curatoriales en Cuba, desde la Instrucción Circular de 1776 hasta los proyectos científicos desarrollados entre 2001 y 2020 en el Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática (IES), el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural (MNHN), el Acuario Nacional de Cuba (ANC) y la Facultad de Biología de la Universidad de La Habana, que permitieron uniformar métodos y compartir experiencias. También se mencionan las 18 ediciones del curso de procedimiento curatorial y publicaciones como la de Mancina y Cruz (2017). El libro consta de 19 capítulos que abordan colecciones diversas: mamíferos, aves, moluscos, insectos, herbarios, peces, arácnidos, ácaros, helmintos, semillas y hongos. Los primeros cuatro capítulos tratan aspectos comunes a todas las colecciones, desde su origen hasta su conservación, siempre considerando las condiciones climáticas del archipiélago cubano y las limitaciones económicas existentes. / It highlights the importance of natural history collections as essential support for biodiversity studies, evolution, natural sciences teaching, and environmental awareness, as well as their heritage value and contribution to reducing scientific research costs. The historical evolution of curatorial procedures in Cuba is reviewed, from the 1776 Circular Instruction to the scientific projects developed between 2001 and 2020 at the Institute of Ecology and Systematics (IES), the National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), the National Aquarium of Cuba (ANC), and the Faculty of Biology of the University of Havana, which allowed for method standardization and experience sharing. The 18 editions of the curatorial procedure course and publications such as Mancina and Cruz (2017) are also mentioned. The book consists of 19 chapters addressing diverse collections: mammals, birds, mollusks, insects, herbaria, fish, arachnids, mites, helminths, seeds, and fungi. The first four chapters deal with aspects common to all collections, from their origin to their conservation, always considering the climatic conditions of the Cuban archipelago and existing economic limitations.
