Abstract

En la Empresa Arimao, en la premontaña del Escambray cienfueguero, se inició hace más de cinco años el trabajo sobre el tránsito de la Agricultura Convencional a la Sostenible, a partir de la Gestión de los Recursos Naturales básicos, en las condiciones de la práctica productiva y con la participación directa de los productores. El diagnóstico primario muestra una tendencia hacia la diversificación agraria que incluye cuatro especies de cítricos, mango, fruta bomba, guayaba, aguacate y coco. En las áreas de autoconsumo cultivan hortalizas, yuca, arroz, entre otros. Poseen 26 casas de cultivo. Existe un centro de lombricultura y tienen colmenas, módulos pecuarios y alevines. Se adecuó el trabajo de gestión de recursos naturales a los requerimientos de las ISO 14000; los objetivos y metas ambientales se expresan en acciones específicas documentadas en dos proyectos: Citricultura Orgánica y Producciones Integradas y continúa en activo el proyecto de Implantación del Sistema de Gestión Ambiental. Se han dejado de aplicar unos 32000 Kg de Agroquímicos anuales a partir del 2002 en las actuales áreas orgánicas. Se inició el pilotaje de Producciones Integradas en más de 250 ha y la racionalización de herbicidas ha determinado un ahorro anual de alrededor de 6000 dólares. Se han aplicado medidas antierosivas como tranques y cobertura protectora y se realiza el Manejo Ecológico de Plagas en unas 310 ha. El trabajo realizado permite adecuar el sistema metodológico y los trabajos experimentales desarrollados al tipo de certificación al que se quiere acceder: ISO-14000, Producciones Integradas y Agricultura Orgánica.
