In the present work, the results obtained during the identification of cowpea genotypes (Vigna unguiculata I, Walp) with high capacity to fix N2 of the air at low availability of P, in which the plants were cultivated in nutrient solution and in pots were compared. with soil and 30 physiological variables were evaluated. The results showed that even when plants grown in solution showed the highest values associated with nodulation; but the lowest in relation to leaf growth, compared to those grown in soil, genotypes with higher values of N2 fixed air in the first culture medium were also when the plants were grown in soil, showing that despite of the differences in the behavior of the plants the results that are reached in the two culture media are comparable.
