Abstract

El Siglo XXI, para muchos es el comienzo de una nueva era. El mundo está cambiando, y junto con ello la civilización. Hay incluso sentimientos inquietantes sobre el futuro y la propia persistencia de la humanidad en el planeta. Aunque entre todas las preguntas, está la misma cuestión referente al papel de la ciencia en la destrucción del planeta, es obvio que al mismo tiempo se ve al conocimiento científico y tecnológico como uno de los patrimonios que la humanidad tiene para salvar su propia existencia. La Geografía, tan antigua casi como la misma presencia del ser humano sobre la Tierra, no puede estar indiferente a todas esas preguntas e inquietudes. Todo ese arsenal de saberes, métodos técnicas que la Geografía dispone, puede ahora más que nunca ponerse a disposición de la humanidad para enfrentar los principales problemas actuales. Pero, al mismo tiempo, ese nuevo panorama global plantea a la Geografía desafíos, retos y cambios en su propia esencia. Sin la presunción de tratar todo el universo de retos y desafíos, en el presente artículo el autor se propone, después de hacer una rápida ojeada al status actual de la Geografía, tratar los ejes fundamentales de los cambios que ocurren, en la Tierra y en el Mundo, al menos en los primeros años del Siglo XXI. A partir de esa presentación, el artículo se plantea que deberá hacer la Geografía para contribuir a la adaptación a tales nuevas situaciones que la humanidad tendrá que enfrentar. Geography, as old as almost the same presence of the human being on Earth, can not be indifferent to all those questions and concerns. All that arsenal of knowledge, technical methods that Geography has, can now more than ever be available to humanity to face the main current problems. But, at the same time, this new global panorama poses to Geography challenges, challenges and changes in its own essence. Without presuming to deal with the whole universe of challenges and challenges, in this article the author proposes, after a quick glance at the current status of Geography, to deal with the fundamental axes of the changes that occur, on Earth and in the World, at least in the first years of the 21st century.
