Abstract

El medio ambiente, por su condición sistémica y basto universo informativo que demanda, resulta de gran complejidad para su interpretación y utilización consecuente. La experiencia geográfica en la materia, permitió conformar una obra orientada a ampliar, complementar y actualizar los aspectos teóricos y metódicos relativos al mismo, mostrando en ejemplos concretos la valides de la utilización de sus argumentos e instrumentos en función de una gestión responsable y orientada hacia el desarrollo sostenible. El presente trabajo se propuso la divulgación de sus elementos claves. En el mismo fueron articulados racionalmente veintidós artículos, gestados por veinticinco investigadores de diferentes instituciones, pues más allá de la apreciación del Instituto de Geografía Tropical, se concibió la creación de un marco propio al debate y concertación científica de muchos de los que hoy abordan el tema. Consta de tres Capítulos: “El medio ambiente, como percepción holística de la realidad”. “El Sistema de Gestión Ambiental en la base del desarrollo” y ”El análisis ambiental en la solución de conflictos”. Cada uno cuenta con la bibliografía pertinente, así como material gráfico requerido. Los aspectos conceptuales que priman en los dos primeros, se concretan a modo de ejemplos en el tercero. Los casos de estudios fueron seleccionados de forma cuidadosa para obtener una representación adecuada de las diversas vertientes dentro de las cuales se han acumulado experiencias; la evaluación de recursos, espacios, de actividades económicas fundamentales, los riesgos, entre otros, obteniéndose una objetiva comprensión de cómo el medio ambiente se constituye en una dimensión sustancial del desarrollo.
