Biodiversidad marina en la laguna costera El Guanal, Cayo Largo, Cuba

Abstract

Se realizó la descripción de características ecológicas generales y un inventario de la flora y la fauna de la laguna costera El Guanal, ubicada en Cayo Largo, región SW de Cuba. Para esto se establecieron 26 estaciones que fueron visitadas en enero y febrero de 1999. Los muestreos se realizaron mediante inmersiones con equipo ligero de buceo y censos visuales cualitativos in situ. Especímenes de identificación compleja fueron colectados para su clasificación en el laboratorio. La salinidad varió entre 37 partes por mil en las estaciones más cercanas al mar abierto y 43 partes por mil en los cuerpos de agua periféricos. Se encontraron 4 especies de fanerógamas marinas, 17 especies de algas, 49 entidades de invertebrados (9 pertenecen al Phylum Porifera, 7 al Phylum Cnidaria, 18 al Phylum Mollusca, 2 al Phylum Annelida, 7 al Phylum Artropoda, 5 al Phylum Echinodermata y 1 al Phylum Chordata) y 28 especies de peces. Ninguna de las especies identificadas durante este estudio es exclusiva de la zona ni está en peligro de extinción o muy sobrexplotada. A pesar de la intensa actividad náutica y de las obras de dragado previas, la naturaleza del sistema ha permitido el mantenimiento de una fase que no es distinguible de situaciones naturales. A description of the general ecological characteristics and an inventory of the flora and fauna of the coastal lagoon El Guanal at Cayo Largo on the SW coast of Cuba, were made. With these objectives 26 station were established wich were visited in January and February 1999. The samplings were made by inmersions with light diving equipment and by qualitative visual census in situ. Samples of complex identification were collected for their laboratory classification. The salinity variation was of 37 part for a thousand in the stations nearer to the open sea and 48 part for a thousand in periferic water. Four species of marine fanerogamas were found, 17 species of algae, 49 of invertebrates (9 belonging to Phylum Porifera, 7 to Phylum Cnidaria, 18 to Phylum Mollusca, 2 to Phylum Annelida, 7 to Phylum Artropoda, 5 to Phylum Echinodermata y 1 to Phylum Chordata) and 28 species of fish. None of the species identified in this study belong only to this zone, nore are they in danger of extinction nor over exploited. Inspite of the intense nautical activity and of the previous drilling work the nature of the system has allowed the maintenance of a phase not different from natural situations. (sic)
